Quilts Mailed to the Troops !
What You Can Do

What you can do to help

Donations of money, blocks, quilt tops, fabric, binding, pillowcases or other sewing needs are most gratefully accepted.

Financial Donations

  • Monetary donations help defray costs to finish the quilts, for the threads, batting and all of the mailing costs. The packages are mailed Priority mail to reach the troops in the timeliest manner, as regular mail has been known to take up to 4-6 months.
    * It takes about $12-$15 to finish up a quilt and get it mailed.
    * It takes about $5-$7 to mail out a quilt. FPO mailings are more expensive than APO.
  • Checks can be made out to Quilts With Love.
  • Donations are tax deductible as we are a 501(C)3 licensed and registered non-profit organization.
Blocks
  • We are using squared up pieced blocks that are 12-½ inches x 12-½ inches.
  • We do prefer that you use 100% cotton fabric, any color.
  • Please refrain from using a religious theme/ pattern.
Quilt Tops
  • Quilt tops should be 56 inches wide x 84 inches long. This is a requirement not a suggested size.
  • Any pattern and color may be used when doing a block or top. Please take care when using the split rail pattern that you do not make it look like a swastika. I have been asked by those in the military serving not to use that pattern.
  • A whole quilt of that block is okay, but not just one block to be included on it's own.
  • Please refrain from using a religious theme/ pattern.
  • We do prefer that you use 100% cotton, but we have done quilts with polyester or blue jeans and tied those. But our first choice is a cotton top to quilt.
  • Backings may be sent also as well as bindings. Backs are to be at least 3 inches wider on each side and 6 inches longer than the top. Twin sheets work well.
Quilts - Finished
  • Quilts are to be 56 inches wide x 84 inches long in size when finished.
  • Any pattern may be used to quilt.
  • Quilts may be quilted, tacked or tied.
  • Use polyester batting.
Fabric
  • Currently we have plenty of fabric, no more is necessary at this time.
Binding
  • Binding should be 3 inches, ironed in half.
  • We prefer bindings pieced on the bias as it helps to eliminate bulk in one place and is easier to sew on. If you can't sew the strips in a bias seam then just cut the strips and we will sew them up here
  • Some colors we use a lot are medium to navy blue, dark reds, tans and sage greens.
Pillowcases
  • Pillowcases are a plus if you would like to sew one. These cases would hold a quilt to be mailed to the troops and it can be used for a pillow cover or to keep for enclosing their quilts when not in use.
  • Directions can be found on the QWL Yahoo Group 'Files' section.
Other sewing needs
  • Thread - quality sewing thread in neutral colors
